Humpty Dumpty, The Armoire

Humpty Dumpty, The Armoire

Please forgive my seeming absence from the virtual halls of Flickr of late, dear friends. I promise to catch up on mail and comments soon.

We've had a water leak running into the parking lot in front of our townhome for 5 or 6 years and a couple of months ago they dug up our front yard to fix it and succeeded in moving it to bubbling up in the sidewalk right in front of the steps that my son, Logan has to go down to get to his bus. Wet moss is not a good thing for a blind and autistic child to try to walk through.

Well, Monday at 6 PM they sent someone down to warn us that we needed to clear out our utility closet so they could get in on Tuesday and that we'd get a letter about the work they were going to do Tuesday morning.

I got the letter. It said they were going to have to go through the floor in the closet to get to the leak and they would be out Tuesday afternoon to look at it. Tuesday afternoon they realize our water line runs dead center through the living room to the kitchen NOT to the closet. So we had one evening to clear the living room before they started jackhammering into the foundation. My living room looks like my Fickr stream. I felt like Hercules. We managed to get it mostly cleared, the property contruction manager and the maintenance guys helped me move the big furniture and almost destroyed our antique armoire.

It all goes together with pegs and shims and they lifted off the top piece that holds it all together before I could explain how it needed to be done. It was a mad scramble to grab pieces before the whole thing was ruined.

Then they pulled up the carpet. I talked them into hauling off our old sofa since there was no room to put it anywhere else and we needed a new one. We bit the proverbial bullet. and got rid of the 6 year old sofa.

Then after a couple of hours they informed me that they double checked and they now thought the leak was coming from a different unit. So we could move our stuff back.
So, my daughter Clare and I have spent the week repairing the armoire and moving furniture back. At least the leak is finally fixed and we got a new couch. It came Friday ( a couch "kit" really, from IKEA, build it yourself) its' name is Backa.

We haven't done anything with this room besides put stuff in it. There is a fireplace and mantle that has been painted and decommissioned that we plan to strip and put back in working order with some type of gas log so that the temperature in the room can be controlled locally. I think the mantle may have been painted for a long time as Donnie tried to strip a section and it was very difficult. Looks like maybe there is milk paint underneath. BUT, persistence is how things get done around here. The door provides access to the master bath.
The drop leaf table in the background is one of the first pieces my brother refinished. Now he has a successful refinishing, antique repair, and Early American furniture reproduction shop in the Atlanta area.
